President demands more rapid counting of votes

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has held a meeting on the situation with the counting of votes after parliamentary elections on October 26 and urged the Central Election Commission (CEC) not to delay the official announcement of the election results, the presidential press service has reported.
“The delay in the vote count has a negative impact on a preliminary assessment of the elections as one of the most transparent and fairest. Almost ten days after the elections a dozen polling stations at district No. 59 are delaying the completion of the entire preliminary electronic counting of votes. This is unacceptable,” Poroshenko said, adding that on Wednesday he had consultations with the Verkhovna Rada speaker and the prime minister on the electoral process.
At the same time, CEC Chairman Mykhailo Okhendovsky noted that the counting of votes at electoral district No. 59 remained blocked and that it would be impossible to complete the count without the help of law enforcement agencies.
“At the stage of counting and tabulation of results in some districts we faced the problems that the Central Election Commission cannot resolve without the assistance of law enforcement agencies,” he said.
Okhendovsky said that to establish the results in a nationwide multi-member constituency the CEC had yet to receive the returns from 19 precinct election commissions.
The meeting was attended by Verkhovna Rada Chairman Oleksandr Turchynov, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk, Prosecutor General Vitaliy Yarema and Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Valentyn Nalyvaichenko.
